What is
Sildenafil Citrate?
Sildenafil Citrate is the
active ingredient used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men.
In other words Sildenafil (full name Sildenafil Citrate) is the active
ingredient in Pfizer Viagra ®. When a man is sexually stimulated, his brain
sends signals to the nerves surrounding the penis. This causes a chain
reaction of events, which starts with the release of nitric oxide into the
body. Nitric oxide plays a major role in the regulation of blood pressure,
the prevention of blood clotting, and the dilation of blood vessels. After
nitric oxide is released, it produces another chemical in the body called
guanosine monophosphate (GMP). GMP is the most vital chemical for helping a
man achieve erections. It widens blood vessels, which increases blood flow
to the penis. As the penis becomes engorged with blood, arteries that
normally carry blood out of the penis become compressed. This results in an
erection.
In addition to GMP, there's another chemical that's produced during the
erection process. It's called PDE5. PDE5 is an enzyme that destroys GMP.
When the production of GMP and PDE-5 are balanced, the penis remains erect.
However, when there is more PDE-5 in the body than GMP, the erection goes
away. Viagra works by blocking the PDE-5 enzyme.
